You may have heard about a fairly new product on the market, called the SheWee. It’s basically a plastic device that allows women to urinate standing up! For some women, the thought of it is disgusting. For others, like myself, it’s a relief! It’s quicker and you don’t have to worry about sitting on disgusting public toilet seats. If men don’t have to, why should we?
Being the adventurous type that I am, I decided to give it a go and order one of these. It was easy! The product comes in a few color options – black, bright blue, freedom purple, pace nato green, power pink, pure white, and red. I, of course, got pink. And this is the best part – it costs only $12. That’s a small investment.
When I got my product in the mail, I was eager to use it. I went right to my own bathroom (which isn’t where I typically would use it, since I keep the place clean), and tried it out. The first time was a bust. I’m embarrassed to say that I had a little bit of a mess to clean up.
Getting used to it was a bit of a struggle. You need to hold it just right. And even when you are, your reflexes might not let you urinate, since you’re so used to sitting down. At least that’s what happened with me.
After I got the hang of it, though, I loved it! It’s easy to use and perfect for those tough times that you don’t want to sit on a dirty toilet or you’re out hiking. If you travel often, this product is definitely for you.
- cheap, one-off fee, you buy it for life
- fairly easy to use with some practice
- only need to pack one, lightweight option
- risk splashing your feet (men can aim further, we can’t if we want to keep a good angle for the funnel)
- incidents happen (trust me they do and I only ever use the Shewee if I wear my Pop&Go Knickers, otherwise good luck changing!)
- you may have to use an empty bottle as container
- using a bottle in the dark is quite scary as you can’t check the level (and as you know 1 glass of water drunk often translates into 1 litre of wee!)
- Shewee funnels need rinsing
The only downside, I’ve found, is that it’s not always convenient to clean it out. Especially since I mostly use it in public restrooms, it’s not easy to find a place to clean it out. From what I understand, though, it’s okay to let it sit for a little while without cleaning it, until you get the opportunity to do so. But then again, this adds time to your urinating experience. So maybe urinating standing up will never be an easy task for women!
If you’re interested in the SheWee, I definitely recommend getting one. We such a small cost, you really can’t go wrong. Even if you only end up using it on rare occasions, it’s still probably worth it. I got my money’s worth on a trip to Seattle, where I spent a lot of time in hostels, bus stations, and airports. It’s quick and easy to pull out that SheWee and you don’t risk infection or catching a cold from unsanitary toilets.
The SheWee is a great product if you travel a lot or go hiking. Find out if it's for you.
